Survive The Maze is a head-to-head strategy arcade game drawing inspiration from the ancient myth of the Minotaur’s labyrinth. It is also a parable which explains the purpose behind SDGGames as a whole. Right away, you will notice the emphasis on light and darkness as a mechanic. You may expect a cliche, light as arbitrarily good and darkness as arbitrarily bad. Instead, you are presented with an honest choice.
You can play as a creature of the darkness. There are no clear boundaries and you can go wherever you please, although you will never truly see where you are going.
Or play as the bearers of the light. You see the world around you for what it is: a complex labyrinth full of twists and turns. You can only go where the maze allows you to go, there is no room for interpretation. Each has its honest advantages. You can win or lose regardless of the side you play on.
Well, you can win or lose this battle. The torches you carry can be extinguished. But no one can ever escape the truth that light itself brings. The walls around you are real. If you chose to play as a creature of darkness, you only delay the inevitable. One day, all will come to light, either in this match, or the next. The light will shine in the darkness, and the darkness will not be able to overcome it.
Jesus once claimed the following: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12) I have been a bearer of the light for a large portion of my life. I can testify that life is way more complicated than most of us realize or care to admit. Some days, it is tempting to snuff out my torch and return to a simple life of ignorant freedom. But denying the existence of the maze around us won’t actually make it go away. Each one of us must chose to live in the light, or to fear it indefinitely.
